Our Lady of Guadalupe Fine Art Print
this is an artistic reproduction of the original image located in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Upon learning that the face had been slightly altered and knowing that the face is the most important of any sacred icon, I researched for the oldest photograph I could find. Finally I found an old black and white photograph from May 18, 1923 by photographer Manuel Ramos. What makes this image special is that it features an artistic reproduction from that an unaltered, black and white 1923 photo.
Place Our Lady of Guadalupe print in your own unique frame. Using professional Ultra-chrome inks your print will come printed on high quality Giclée paper.

More About This Artistic Reproduction of the Original Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
In my desire to become a better artist for Our Lord I turned to Mother Mary’s intercession.
As a teen I kept a magazine cut-out of an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in my prayer corner. As I prayerfully contemplated the picture of the artwork of Our Lady I found my self drawn to a more profound realization of Mother Mary’s presence. And yet with each glance I also became more aware of the aged, protruding seams of the garment, the water stains from the 1629 flood, and the overall soiled look that built up over the centuries before it was placed behind glass.
Inside my heart I felt driven to make a reproduction that would “clean it up” (if only a little) without altering the way it look originally in anyway. I so longed to see more clearly the way Our Lady originally painted it.
After I obtained a copy of a high resolution photograph I began my work to make a faithful reproduction.
However, during the work I learned that sometime after 1926 there were alterations done to the original image due to damage it suffered when it was kept in hiding. Knowing that the face is the most important of any sacred icon, I then searched for the oldest photograph I could find. Finally I found a black and white photograph from May 18, 1923 by photographer Manuel Ramos. I studied the face from the black and white photo and compared it to the image we see today and noticed slight differences that affected the overall appearance of the face.
Therefore, I used the photo as a reference for making the reproduction of the face so that I could get as close as possibly to the original look of her face.
Key Details Regarding Retouching & Restoration:
- 1920s-1930s Modifications:
- Comparisons of photographs taken in 1923 and 1930 show that the face of the Virgin was modified, specifically with added shading around the eyes, a redrawing of the lips, a darkened hair color, and a smoothed, reshaped facial contour.

1926 Secret Removal:
- On November 14, 1921, a bomb exploded below the image, destroying the altar but leaving the image unharmed. The subsequent repair work required in the years following (early 1920s) may have led to the retouching mentioned.
